Description
The College of Education and Malcolm Price Laboratory School at the
University of Northern Iowa produced the Democracy in the Classroom:
Developing Character and Citizenship series of three DVDs (Elementary,
Middle, and High School) and Resource Guide to help educators create a
school environment in which students learn about democracy by building
character and citizenship. The key elements of this process are the
Tenets of Democracy. They include:
Tolerance,
Critical Thinking and Decision-Making,
Thinking Together and Making Meaning,
Power Sharing and Empowerment,
Individual Responsibility and Civil Involvement with Others. |

| The DVDs
contain video of natural classroom lessons at a variety of grade levels
PreK-12 integrating the Tenets of Democracy into various content area
activities. DVDs are packaged with a booklet of video transcripts,
detailed lesson plans, and student assessment tools. The downloadable Resource Guide
offers background information about the Tenets of Democracy featured in
the video examples, detailed lesson plans, complete video transcripts, and democratic classroom and citizenship resources. By using these
resources, educators are be able to see how other teachers
create democratic classrooms, learn from these examples, and then improve learning
environments for their own students. |
Elementary Level DVD Structure
Some narrative interpretation is provided for viewers to
help build understanding about the Tenets of Democracy. Analysis videos
are free of narration, to provide viewers or trainers the opportunity to
provide their own interpretations.
