October 25, 2002 Citizenship Assembly
Review of October theme, “Caring Community.”
Mrs. Struck, the elementary counselor, talked briefly about the classroom guidance unit she has been working with the Unit II students titled, “Building a Caring Community.” The Unit II children and teachers came to the front of the auditorium. They demonstrated the handclap they created with Mrs. Struck as a part of this classroom guidance unit. The rest of the students and teachers in the audience joined in the handclap a second time. The handclap goes like this.
BUILDING A CARING COMMUNITY

The students say the words while they are doing the handclap.
The Unit II children stayed at the front of the auditorium while Mrs. Struck introduced the book,
Hands Are Not For Hitting, by Martine Agasi. She told the audience the Unit II children had some important ideas they learned from this book they wanted to share today. Mrs. Struck held up signs as cues for the children to read them and then do the matching gesture. After a sign was read a child held that sign up for the audience to see. The signs’ captions and matching gestures are listed below:
