PLS News Script: Civil Involvement With Others
Tina: Welcome to our PLS special report. I am Tina Trustworthy.
Sam: And I am Sam Sensitivity. Today we will be investigating Civil Involvement.
Tina: Hey Sam! What exactly is civil involvement?
Same: Well Tina, Civil Involvement is how people participate productively in a democracy. Civil involvement promotes the orderliness and welfare of the group, as well as the individual’s rights and responsibilities.
Tina: (looking confused) HUH!!!
Sam: Lets go to our on the spot reporter Cy Civilized to help us better understand Civil Involvement.
Cy: Hello! My name is Cy Civilized and I am the on the spot reporter for PLS news.
We are here at Price Lab School to discover what Civil Involvement looks like, and how students here are promoting civil involvement. Excuse me(to group of students). I am Cy Civilized with PLS News. I was wondering what you were doing?
Student 1: We are doing a project on Gandhi. We have divided the project into four parts, so that each person has a job to do.
Student 2: That's right. Each person is responsible for doing their own part.
Student 3: This way one person is not doing the whole project.
Student 2: We also have to consider the whole group, because our project is not complete without all the parts.
Cy: AHH- each person is responsible for their own work, and also for the welfare of the whole group. This is a great example of civil involvement!! (to camera) I'm kind of hungry! Lets see what's for lunch in the cafeteria.
All students: having a quiet conversation
Cy: Hello. I am Cy civilized with PLS news. Could you please speak up!
Student 4: I'm sorry, we really need to keep our voices down. There are a lot of people here and we don't want to be rude.
Student 5: Yeah, this isn't the playground. There are rules that keep the lunchroom running smoothly.
Student 6: We can't just think about ourselves. We need to consider everyone in the lunchroom.
Cy: (getting loud) OH-I get it!!!
Students: Shhhh!
Cy: (in a low voice) Sorry! (to camera) It is all part of civil involvement. Sometimes you have to consider what behavior is appropriate in different situations. Let go see what's happening in the hall.
Student 7: Hey ____(name). Could I please borrow that book that you have been reading.
Student 8: Sure! It is my favorite. I bet you will really like it. Here.
Cy: Pardon me, I'm Cy Civilized from PLS news and I couldn't help but overhear. Why would you let someone borrow your favorite book?
Student 8: Well, ____ is my friend. S/he is reliable and trustworthy. I know that he will take good care of my book.
Student 7: I know that I need to use self-control and respect other people’s property.
Cy: Wow! I never thought of it that way. (to camera) Reliability, trustworthiness, and self-control are all part of responsibility and civil involvement. Lets go and see what's happening on the playground.
Student 9: Come on. Would you like to play kickball with us?
Student 10: Sure. It sounds like fun. Lets go and find some more people to play.
Student 11:I would like to play too! What are the rules?
Student 9: Well, we all need to be positive. We don't want to put anyone down, argue, or exclude people. By being positive we will all have a better time!
Cy: Hey, there's that civil involvement again. These students are using positive involvement in their kickball game. All this reporting is making me thirsty! Lets go get a drink.
Scene 6: Drinking fountain. Two students in line
and Cy waiting at the end.
Student 12: (taking a drink)
Cy: Hey-are you going to drink the whole Cedar River or what.
Student 13: Listen, you need to be patient. You will get a turn in a minute. Until then you need to respect the other people in line.
Cy: Yeah- you're right.
Student 12: (to other student) Thanks for being so patient! I was so thirsty. See you in gym class!
Cy: Well, looks like being patient is also part of civil involvement. Looks like these students really have got it together here at Price Lab School. This is Cy Civilized, and now back to the desk!
Tina: Thanks Cy. I now know what I can do to be a responsible and involved citizen.
Sam: That's right Tina. We can do things like taking responsibility for ourselves, and for our group, and using appropriate behavior in different situations.
Tina: Right-Being reliable, trustworthy, patient, and using self-control will also help us be good citizens. We should also try to be positively involved.
Sam: That's all the time we have for today. I'm Sam Sensitivity.
Tina: And I'm Tina Trustworthy.
Together: Be a good citizen! It's important.
