Introduction of Freedom of the Religion

November 2005 Assembly

1.  Introduction

  • Wear a costume from Colonial times.  I wore a triangular felt hat.

·        Why did our forefathers (Pilgrims) come to America?  Our assembly was just before Thanksgiving so it was good timing for this theme.

·        They weren’t happy in England (and also in other countries).  Many times they came to America because of religious persecution.

·        That’s why our forefathers wrote into the First Amendment that America should have religious freedom.

2.  Activity

  • You have the right to choose which religion you believe in or don’t believe in, and also the right to be respected.
  • I wore an Amish bonnet.

“Has anyone seen someone wearing a hat like this?”

*We talked about the Amish beliefs – no electricity or modern conveniences like TV, cars, jewelry, or colorful clothing.

·        I wore a yarmulke (pronounced yah-mi-kuh).

“Does anyone know what this hat is?”

*We talked about the Jewish beliefs – they wear this hat at the synagogue and other places to show their beliefs, and their Sabbath in on Saturday.

·        I wore a veil from India.

“Has anyone seen a veil like this?”

            *Hinduism

·        I didn’t have a costume for the Muslim religion, so we just talked about it.

·        Not every religion dresses differently.

*Christian religions – Catholic

*Protestants – Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian,

Jehovah Witness, etc.

*Seventh Day Adventist

·        Ask if there are any other religions that we hadn’t talked about?

No matter what religion you are you have rights and need to be
