Locker Room/Pool

Goal
To provide a safe atmosphere where students can dress promptly for their physical education/swimming classes and all co-curricular activities.  To provide a safe and educational area for children to learn about aquatics as an activity to promote survival skills, swimming strokes, water safety, fitness activities and cooperative games as they interact with others.

Behavioral Expectations and Responsibilities in Locker Rooms and Pool Area
The following guidelines were established to increase the staff consistency while supervising the locker room and pool areas.  These expectations apply to any locker room used by PLS NK-12 students for any swimming or physical education classes.  Given the complexity of these expectations, students should not be asked to memorize them verbatim, but rather have a general understanding they can share, if asked, in their own words.

Students involved in a swimming class or unit will:
1. Walk safely to the appropriate locker room;
2. Store street clothes in appropriate place:
a. Secondary students in their lockers;
b. Elementary students in the designated area assigned by the supervisor:
 i. Keep clothes right side out;
 ii. Socks in shoes;
 iii. Underwear in pants/shorts;
 iv. Keep own clothes together.
3. Shower before entering the pool area;
4. Enter the pool area when directed to by the “swimming instructor” only!!
5. Listen for instructions before engaging in any activity;
6. Follow posted swimming pool rules including rules about the diving board;
7. Put equipment away in appropriate areas;
8. Be lined up at designated doors within one minute following the signal to get out of the water:
a. Boys line up on East wall,
b. Girls line up on North wall away from pool;
9. Line up facing forward, hands to self, and use quite voices;
10. Walk to their designated locker rooms under the direction of the “swimming instructor”;
11. Shower following their swimming classes;
12. Take swimming suit off in the shower and wring out the suit in the shower before towel drying;
13. Dry body from top to bottom;
14. Us the towel to stand on while dressing for hygiene purposes;
15. Dry hair with dryers if necessary;
16. Put the towel and/or swim suit borrowed fro the school in the appropriate basket;
17. Line up in the designated areas:
a. Elementary girls=against first row of lockers,
b. Elementary boys=sitting bench,
c. Secondary girls=hallway outside office #158,
d. Secondary boys=hallway outside office #256;
18. Keep plastic bags with wet clothes quiet while walking back to class.

Possible Clarifications
1. Designate locker rooms:
a. All girls=Locker room #159
b. Boys=Locker room #257
c. Lower elementary boys=Locker room #257
2. Pool Rules to be posted:
a. Enter the pool only when directed to by the swimming instructor!
b. Walk—No running!
c. No excessive splashing.
d. No spitting water at other people
e. No dunking others under the water
f. Listen to the teacher between activities
g. Use appropriate listening position requested by the instructor—ex.: sit on side of pool or on bleachers.
