When teachers monitor students, they will watch, listen, and reflect what they see. It is also the time to decide when and how to intervene. Johnson, Johnson, and Holubec (1998) described three rounds of monitoring:

1. The teacher checks to see if students are working together. If not, the teacher has to bring them together and makes sure they are doing the right assignment.

2. The teacher makes sure the students work well together. The teacher makes sure students can explain what they are doing, by checking for understanding and cooperation.

3. The teacher observes and writes down specific data on an observation sheet. During this observation time the teacher can interrupt and give positive feedback.
