About The Center

To meet the needs of K-12 schools in the United States to raise funds from alternative sources, the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), through its College of Education, has established the “National Center for Public and Private School Foundations.” The Center is housed in the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) and is supervised by Dr. David Else, Director of the IEL and Associate Professor in the UNI College of Education. The Project Director is Dr. Les Huth.

The Center engages in a variety of initiatives to prepare public and private school personnel to establish and sustain foundations. Most, but not all, of the activities are conducted electronically using a specially designed website.

The following is a brief summary of center’s web-based resources

About the Center
This feature encompasses the Center’s overview and mission, as well as the goals, evaluation, partners, and the timeline of the project.

Foundation start-up guide
The guide gives a brief idea of the major steps in creating a school foundation. The introduction presents school foundations from a theoretical perspective; the planning stage, the board of directors, developing a timeline, legal issues, fundraising strategies, and foundation’s relationships address practical issues someone who wants to start a foundation might encounter.

Resources
This feature offers various specialty information structured in the following categories: Research Findings, Library of Literature, Best Practices, Policies and Procedures, Glossary and Useful Links.

  • Research Findings will present research articles related to establishing and operating school foundations.

  • The Library of Literature features an extensive list of annotated recommended readings. In order to facilitate your search, the books are classified in four broad categories: Fundraising, Boards of Trustees, Foundations, Grants, Funding, Donations and Donors, and Nonprofit Organizations.

  • Best Practices feature successful school foundations for each state. You can access the websites of these foundations by clicking on their address. A brief description accompanies each foundation.
