Purpose: 

The course Studies in K-12 School Foundations is intended to provide a design model for school administrators and personnel, school board members or interested citizens. The course will provide information and activities that will present the participants with both critical cognitive information and research as well as practical applications of the information provided.  For school buildings or districts that have established a foundation it will offer tools to assess the structure and design of the existing foundation.

 

Goals:

  • To provide participants with a tool to expand the resources available to a school district, building, or private school system that will enhance student learning and staff development
  • To develop or review the purpose, goals, and objectives of a school foundation
  • To review successful models of school foundations
  • To provide activities that will apply the cognitive and research information in your community

Course Structure

 

Topic 1:  Why do we need school foundations in our community? Purpose and benefits of having a school foundation.

 

Topic 2:  Who can start a foundation and how? Initial steps in forming a foundation.

 

Topic 3:  Who will lead the foundation? Types of foundation boards.

 

Topic 4:  How do I get my foundation a tax-exempt status? Legal issues related to registering your foundation. The role of paid professional accountant.

 

Topic 5:  Who and how runs a school foundation? Foundation organization and management.

 

Topic 6:  How do I raise money for the foundation? Fundraising strategies, paid and volunteer fundraisers.

 

Topic 7:  How will the money be spent? Disseminating foundation funds.

 

Topic 8:  How do you make your foundation visible? Your foundation and its relationship to other organizations and the media.
