MultiCultural: Previewing Questions

  1. What is culturally responsive caring? How can teachers use the components of culturally responsive caring to improve their teaching?
  2. Review Robinson’s lesson plan sections School Background Information and Student Characteristics. How could a teacher incorporate students’ backgrounds and languages, such as the students in Robinson’s classroom, into their lesson planning? 
  3. What are some of the challenges and opportunities of teaching in inner-city schools? What are some of the challenges and opportunities of teaching in affluent suburban schools? In which kind of school do you think teachers can make the most difference? Why? In which kind of school would you prefer to teacher? Why?

MultiCultural: Post-viewing Questions

  1. How does Robinson consider students’ backgrounds to improve classroom communication? How does she organize information and modify her speech to meet her students’ language needs?
  2. How could this lesson reflect more multicultural planning? How could the inclusion of transportation methods in other cultures, specifically in the Bengali culture, enhance this lesson?
  3. Judy Robinson explains in her interview that she records the computer slide presentation on VHS tapes to send home for parents to see. She says, “. . . anyway that I can include the parents or families in what their students are doing in the classroom and letting them actually see what we’re doing, it’s great instead of just a paper going home or a book going home. It’s very exciting for them and for me to include them in what we’re doing.” Do you feel parental involvement is important? Why or why not? What steps would you take to encourage parent participation?
