Online Video Case Studies Conference Case studies have been used as the basis of courses in pre-service education for many years. Just like their counterparts in medicine and in business, these cases attempt to prepare teaching credential candidates to practice in a complex world where knowledge about teaching is not enough. Candidates also need to know how to apply this knowledge, to develop an understanding of the application of this knowledge in an often complex and imperfect situation. Over the last decade, many attempts have been made to use linear video or CD ROM to provide students with the ability to see a master teacher demonstrating best practices. Today we are beginning to explore the use of online video to create online video case studies to use as part of teacher preparation. The Online Video Case Studies Conference was held on March 27 – 29, 2000 to begin a dialogue among the recipients of Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology who had indicated an interest in using video as part of their grant. Previous discussions indicated that all grantees were struggling with issues of how to best take advantage of features of the Web, features that are much different than linear videotape or even multimedia CD ROMs, and yet stay true to the research literature on using case studies for teacher education. How can online video case studies contribute to helping teaching credential candidates understand pedagogical issues while seen in demonstrations of practice in the classroom? How can the online versions of these case studies overcome some of the problems encountered the previous technologies. Additional questions about the kinds of technology to use (streaming vs. downloadable, Quick Time vs. Real), in an area where these technologies are rapidly changing, were particularly problematic. Assumptions about access to high-speed bandwidth are particularly problematic. Prior to the
conference the attendees indicated some of their interests and concerns.
These are summarized at this site under the responses to
Questionnaire One. http://moon.pepperdine.edu/gsep/petprep/ppt3.html The discusssion about these topics was continued face to face at the Online Video Case Studies Conference. Representatives of more than 30 PT3 grants were in attendance. Several professional organizations and non-profit groups were also represented.
