In most cases, the RealPlayer 8 Basic installer automatically configures
your Web browser so that it starts RealPlayer 8 and begins playback when you
click a video link. If RealPlayer 8 does not start when you click a video
link, you must manually configure your Web browser. Please chose what system
and Internet browser you use:
To manually configure Microsoft Internet Explorer
4.0x and 5.0x to automatically start RealPlayer 8 for Windows, do the
following:
- Click the Start menu, choose Programs, and then Windows
Explorer.
- In Windows Explorer, click the View menu and choose Options
(or Folder Options).
- Click the File Types tab.
- Scroll to see if RealMedia File is in the list. If it is listed,
double-click it to open the edit dialog box. If it is not listed, click
the New button.
- In the dialog box, enter the following information:
Description of Type: RealMedia File
Content Type (MIME): application/vnd.rn-realmedia
Default Extension for Content Type: .rm
- Click the Edit button and enter the following information in the Action
dialog box:
Action: open
Application used to perform action: browse to the location of
Realplay.exe (default is C:\Program Files\Real\Realplayer\Realplay.exe)
- Click OK.
- Repeat the steps above for each of the file types whose information is
listed below.
Description of Type: RealAudio File
Content Type (MIME): audio/vnd.rn-realaudio
Default extension for content type: .ra, .ram
Description of Type: RealVideo File
Content Type (MIME): video/vnd.rn-realvideo
Default extension for content type: .rv
Description of Type: RealAudio File
Content Type (MIME): audio/x-pn-realaudio
Default extension for content type: .ra, .ram
Description of Type: RealAudio File
Content Type (MIME): audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin
Default extension for content type: .rpm
To manually configure Netscape Communicator 4.0x -
4.7x to work with RealPlayer 8 for Windows, do the following:
- Start Netscape Communicator.
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Double-click Navigator to expand the list.
- Select Applications.
- Scroll to see if the RealPlay File type is listed.
If the file type is listed, select it and click the Edit button.
If the file type is not listed, click the New Type button.
- Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:

Extension .ra, .ram
MIME Type audio/x-pn-realaudio
- For the Application to use, click the Browse button and
locate the Realplay.exe program. (The default location is
C:\Program Files\Real\Realplayer)
- Click OK.
- Repeat the steps above for each of the file types whose information is
listed below.

To manually configure Microsoft Internet Explorer
4.x so that it automatically starts RealPlayer 8 for Macintosh, do the
following:
- Start Internet Explorer.
- Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
- Click on the triangle next to Receiving Files to expand the list
of options.
- Click File Helpers.
- Click the Add button.
- In the Edit File Helper dialog box, enter the following
information:
Description: RealPlayer File
Extension: .rm
MIME type: application/vnd.rn-realmedia
- In the File Type section, click the Browse button, locate
the RealPlayer 8 icon on your hard drive, and click OK. (By
default, RealPlayer 8 is located in the Internet:Internet
Applications:RealPlayer folder.)
- In the Handling section, choose Post-Process with Application
from the How to handle list.
- Locate the RealPlayer 8 icon on your hard drive and click OK.
- Click OK, and then click OK again to save your changes.
- Repeat the steps above for each of the following file types:
Description: RealPlayer File
Extension: .ram
MIME type: audio/vnd.rn-realaudio
Description: RealPlayer File
Extension: .rv
MIME type: video/vnd.rn-realvideo
Description: RealPlayer File
Extension: .ra, .ram
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio

MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin

it automatically starts RealPlayer 8 for Macintosh, do the following:

Click the Choose button, locate the RealPlayer 8 icon on
your hard drive, and click Open. (By default, RealPlayer 8
is located in the Internet Applications:RealPlayer folder.)
- Click OK.
- Repeat steps 5-8, substituting the following file types:

Suffixes .ra
Description RealPlay File
MIME Type video/vnd.rn-realvideo

MIME Type audio/x-pn-realaudio

- Click OK to save your changes and close the Preferences dialog
box.
Once the RealMedia file types are configured, you will also need to
configure the browser to recognize the RealPlayer plug-in. Use the
instructions below:
- Start Netscape.
- Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
- Click the triangle next to Navigator to expand the list of
options.
- Click Applications.
- Click the New button.
- Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:
Description RealPlayer Plugin
MIME type audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin
Suffixes .rpm
- In the Handled by section:
Click Plug-in.
From the drop down menu, choose RealPlayer Plug-in.
- Click OK.
- Click OK to save your changes and close the Preferences dialog
box.
